De Vliegeraar (The Kite Runner)

I am not really a movie fan, seldom would go to the cinema for a movie but last night together with my friend C, we saw The Kite Runner. What made me see the movie was because I have read the book which was written by Khaled Hosseini and I must say I give this book a score of 8, 10 being the highest score. Highly recommended so if it’s showing in a cinema near you, bring some friends or family members to watch it with you. I only wished it wasn’t subtitled in Dutch but in English (great part of the film was Afghan spoken) but I still liked it a lot.

In The Kite Runner - Rated PG13, Amir and Hassan grow up together in Afghanistan like brothers, although they couldn’t be more different. Amir is the son of a wealthy businessman, a Sunni Muslim, a Pashtun, and he’s educated and reads voraciously. Hassan’s father is a servant to Amir’s father, and Hassan is a Sh’ia Muslim, a Hazara, he’s illiterate. Hassan is a devoted friend and servant to Amir and because neither boy has a mother, they spend their boyhoods roaming the streets of Kabul together. One day after winning a kite competition, Amir went to look for Hassan who was retrieving the losing kite to give to Amir, as a sort of trophy. Amir did find Hassan in a hidden alley bullied by 3 boys ending up being raped. This scene was executed carefully that you will not see the act.

BUT I don’t want to spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it yet. I suggest you do. You’ll see the sad truth inside Afghanistan. The killing, how a beautiful country was ruined and taken over by the Taliban. And in this movie, you’ll also see sex slavery that it will make your heart twitch. I find the 2 actors-boys who played Amir and Hassan unforgettable, particularly the Hassan boy. Which by the way, 3 boys who played bullies and involved in the raping of Hassan, and Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada who played Hassan had to flee(article here) Afghanistan in response to fears that they could be attacked for their enactment of a culturally inflammatory rape scene.

Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada, left, and Zekiria Ebrahimi in “The Kite Runner.”

Khaled Hosseini (author) is an Afghan émigré living in San Francisco and his debut novel has received mostly good reviews. The Denver Post says The Kite Runner “ranks among the best-written and provocative stories of the year so far.”

Do see it, you might like it too.
