Friday…no meat?

Coming from a catholic family ( I am no longer a catholic though) I remember my grandma preparing anything but meat on fridays and not just on lenten season. I wonder if the new generation still practise the Friday-eat-no-meatday?
I never followed my grandma’s tradition siguro kung buhay lola ko, panay sermon inabot ko , though I have tried this lent. I just believe that what comes in and goes to the stomach does not make a person spiritually clean or dirty but what comes out of the mouth and being spoken (tongue kills) and one’s thoughts…that’s where the danger lies.

Friday I chose to make Chicken Congee (Lugaw with chicken wings) and bean curd (tofu) with soya sauce/citroen dip. I was surprised because both my husband and dad-in-law ate the congee. What about you my blog neighbours who are married to americans and europeans, ever fed them rice porridge? If you are a practising catholic and your spouse is not, do you allow them to have meat on fridays?

not eating meat is difficult! oh my. last friday.. well, yea. we didnt eat meat because my mom prepared all-seafood meals. i think i got so sick of all the fish i ate last friday. but here’s the scenario at home at exactly 12midnight… my cousins and i raided the fridge to find something meaty there. it almost felt like eating noche buena. hehe. just sharing =) belated happy easter and hope you enjoy your week!

the only meat we ate over thew Holy Week was the giniling in the spaghetti…

    BUT

i think binge-ing on all those fresh seafood was a SIN in itself… if you’d base it from old traditions of fasting and abstinence :D

Sasagot ba ako dito? I’m not married pero hihirit pa rin. :hihi:
Chicken is meat. Today’s Catholics can eat meat on Fridays outside the season of Lent although you’ll be surprised how many different rules are there based on where we are. The restriction on abstaining from meat on Fridays has been lifted a long time ago, after Vatican II, if I’m not mistaken.

I agree with you when you say “what comes in and goes to the stomach does not make a person spiritually clean or dirty” although Buddhists and some Jews may disagree with us (sa kanila natin namana yung practice). In any case, it’s a discipline with shades of asceticism with its own inherent merits.

    Happy Easter Thess! :cm:

am technically still a catholic, pero in practice, i’ve never followed this “rule” kasi i don’t understand/agree with the reason behind it.

haven’t served congee… must try… may stock pa naman ako ng kasubha dito (gusto mo?)…

QUEENZ: ever had bbq tahong? just plain bbq (few minutes) then put some butter? :cutie:

    KAREN: bawal sumagot walang asawa!!
My husband told me that when his grandparents, pure catholic (many years ago, grand dad was an altar guy) finally heard that they can have meat on good fridays, my dad in law ,then, said to his parents: Now now, you have followed the strict rules of the church and suddenly, they’ve changed a supposedly thousand of years rule, don’t you feel cheated?…Just like the Buddhists or Jews, we may also disagree to their (some) practise…oh well, kanya kanya na lang talaga tayo ng paniniwala at gawa ano?

:bigbird:
