The beauty of Spring!

This is one of the many  scenes that I utterly miss during fall and winter time! To wonder beautiful narcissus like these I need not go to a botanical garden because streets and motorways are filled with them! What a wonderful sight, isn’t it? Looking at their color makes you forget the long winter you had. I took this a couple of minutes walk from my home.

Narcissus (pronounced /nɑrˈsɪsəs/) is the botanic name for a genus of mainly hardy, mostly spring-flowering, bulbs in the Amaryllis family native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia. There are also several Narcissus species that bloom in the autumn. Though Hortus Third cites 26 wild species, Daffodils for North American Gardens cites between 50 and 100 including species variants and wild hybrids. Through taxonomic and genetic research, it is speculated that over time this number will probably continue to be refined. Daffodil is a common English name, sometimes used now for all varieties, and is the chief common name of horticultural prevalence used by the American Daffodil Society. The range of forms in cultivation has been heavily modified and extended, with new variations available from specialists almost every year.

Pillar (St. Peter's Basilica)

A quick shot I took of one of the pillars in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It was the dove that caught my attention. I found it beautifully done. To be honest the number of Saints and images in the church’s interior that I saw that day was too much that after shooting 1 or 2 I lost  interest to shoot the rest. That was probably the reason why I even forgot to shoot Michael Angelo’s Pieta. I don’t know why, but that always happen when I’m shooting church interior. Probably because I’m not a fan of statues.

So it was ‘refreshing’ to see this dove. Impressive pillar, isn’t it?

I want to escape!

Not only I, an Asian living in Holland, is wishing for this winter to leave but the Europeans themselves think they had just enough of this chilly weather! For more than 3 weeks now, it’s been snowing almost everyday paired with freezing temperature. A combination that is pretty ‘lethal’ for these poor ducks. Food is just scarce.
I know it’s silly but I can’t help but daydream being in Asia or anywhere sunny right now. Or somewhere not snowing!
Thailand? Singapore? Malaysia? or Brazil? Mexico? Ah it doesn’t matter where as long as it’s not freezing cold! A friend is flying abroad next week to escape this weather (and oh well to celebrate her birthday too) if only I can fly with her, right now I will choose from playa del carmen hotels and book, right now I’ll fly!

Winter colors.

must be heavy

When I went out this morning I was excited. Because it’s so white outside! Netherlands has been experiencing snow the past few days and it’s actually annusual the amount we’re getting right now. We live in the part where 2cm snowfall is the norm. But this year we’re getting 20cm! And in some parts of the country people are reporting to having up to 60cm deep snow!

Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium have suspended flights due to the heavy snow. People are advised to remain home and not drive unless it’s necessary. I had to beg my husband to cancel his tomorrow’s appointment because I knew this weather is here to stay for a while. I’m glad he listened because normally he’ll turn a deaf ear  especially if it concerns work, that’s how serious he is when it comes to appointments, by hook or by crook he’ll go.

Anyhow, it has stopped snowing for half a day now but tonight it will begin again and it’s predicted that we’ll get a white Christmas this year!

St. Peter's Basilica (inside the dome)

inside_dome

Ever wonder how the inside (of the dome)  of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican city looks like?

Here it is. Visitors are protected by this metal fence. So taking photos from within is not that easy. Also there’s not much room to move. To know more about the biggest known church in the world, you can check out this wikipedia link:

I climbed the top of St. Peter's Basilica!

December 11, 2009, our  second day in Rome. We took a hop-on-hop-off bus that takes sightseers around Rome, taking them to all key must-see places. That day we planned to go to The Pantheon but while on the bus I asked my husband to instead we ride all the way to the Vatican, to which he agreed to.

Unlike when I first lay my eyes on the Colosseum, the biggest known church in the world- St. Peter’s Basilica did not gave me that ‘shiver’ BUT still, it was impressive inside and out. I will be sharing more photos on my upcoming posts but for now let me share with you one of the many shots I took upon reaching the top and outside of the church’s dome. I wasn’t  prepared, didn’t know the challenge ahead when I agreed to go to the top. We were first taken up by a lift but after that, +320 steps were needed to be climbed just to reach the top. People along the way were puffing, one of them was me….  I actually stopped 2x and thought I’m having a heart attack, whew! But I did it! And to tell you, it was worth it.  Breathtaking (literally) view ;)

How about you, are you in a good shape? Let me leave you this link in case you aren’t insured yet: health insurance leads.
I promise myself that I’ll be in a better shape the next time we visit Rome. Because there’s still so many places we want to explore! ;)
